Well researched about an actual historical event many in the west are ignorant about. The horror of Japan's efforts to occupy and eventually occupy Korea has never been fully acknowledged and apologized for by the Japanese which explains why so many Asian countries that Japan occupied during the war are critical of Japan inspire of their economic trade agreements that they are partners. The book depicts the cultural practices and the caste system very well as well as the self-serving interests and corruption that the upper classes pursued at the expense of the general population is conveyed clearly.Eager to read his sequel.

The true story of the last queen of Korea is worth researching. This fictionalised story enables the reader to understand that she was an amazing woman, forced into a life dominated by men where intrigue and betrayal were a part of life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in historical dramas.

I was totally surprised with the telling of the story and the angle in which the author approach the theme of the manuscript!! It was such a delightful and completely different approach for this wonderful tale within a tale, or theme within a theme!!! I was so caught up in this book I could not put it down easily. Absolutely captivating and brilliant in his approach from one intriguing plot to the next, I fell in love with this style of writing and retelling history as a realistic and dramatic backdrop to a love and commitment for family and country. I would LOVE to read a sequel to this story of Korea and her survival through imperialism and war.The Dragon Queen character was a woman born before her time! Excellent! Excellent Read!! Highly recommend this book!!

The second "Dragon Queen" book I've read, this seems to follow history quite closely and certainly added substantially to my knowledge about Korea. I visited there frequently during the late 1980's and 1990's and lived in Korea for 7-8 months, finally learning Hangul to some extent. But most national discussion was contemporary and my efforts to master the language plus complete my business assignments precluded other research. I wish I would have had some of this new knowledge to spur me towards investigating remaining connections. The story is told well and enjoyably, even if the primary Korean character is perhaps portrayed a bit _too_ capable and knowledgeable. After reading other critiques of Daughters of the Dragon Queen I was perhaps sensitized to some of the mistakes on Korean terminology, so each time that Korean names were listed with the surnames last I found myself a bit irritated. It's notable that these sort of trivial issues, once in mind, can negatively affect enjoyment even when I repeatedly tried to tell myself not to let them. It would seem these could have been edited to the more correct Korean treatment.I also note that considered moves towards Russia and/or the USA as buffers against Japanese pressure seem to have escaped this story. I only found this upon checking the historical veracity of this story so I didn't really miss it at the time, but in retrospect this seems to show the flexibility of the Dragon Queen's approach to diplomacy and might have added to the tale.I enjoyed this novel quite a bit more than it's precursor.

I found this book did not sustain my attention, unlike the author’s previous book. Although Daughters of the Dragon was based on historical fact, as is this story, it elicited personal empathy with the characters of Anna and Jae-hee from the reader. The Dragon Queen reads too much like a dry history text. I did not feel empathy for Queen Min, or any of the other characters. The story was interesting from a historical point of view, I now understand more about how Korea’s present day situation developed; but I don’t enjoy having history force fed to me in a fiction book. Had I wanted to read the History of Korea, I could have visited the History section of a Library. The parallel time line in this book did not work for me at all. The section where Anna captures Nate and dresses up as a Queen to give a historical lecture was frankly ridiculous. Nate himself a one-dimensional unbelievable caricature.Disappointing, like so many sequels.

Another powerful and captivating story which I highly recommend! I enjoyed it just as much as Daughters of the Dragon. Once again I couldn't put it down and stayed up till the wee hours of the morning reading "just one more chapter". Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Don't get me wrong this was another great story, and again I could not put it down, I have now read all of Mr. Andrews book and each one is a good story told very well.( I will read anything he writes) In this book the details allowed you to truly picture what everything looked like the setting -- the characters -- the relationships. (I am reminded of James Clavell). I am looking forward to book number 3.

Seems to me that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is a stale mate. There is no way the leaders of North Korea are going to step away from the power and money they have to unit with the South. Who knows on 2018 there has been movement maybe the North sees the prosperity of the South and would like that as well. Enjoyed reading the history of this country
