Beautifully & intelligently written. All saints reflect the light of Jesus Christ. In this book, Houselander cannot reflect on Mary without always talking about Christ and that's how it ought to be. I would wager that if somebody ran the entire text of this book through a word-counting program, the name of Jesus would come up more often than that of Mary.
This book is an essay, written in a form of prose, but sometimes there are poetry compositions as well. It is a description on the earthy life of Saint Mary, the Mother of Jesus, which is also called the Blessed Virgin or the Blessed Mother.With a simple, yet secure style, Caryll Houselander (by many defined as a mystic like Julian of Norwich) describes the ordinary, daily life of Mary, her difficulties, challenges, joys and sorrows. She lived like any other mother, but differently from them, she always put trust in God above anything else, transforming her life from ordinary into extraordinary. Too bad many Christians as well as Catholics do not know much about Caryll. If you have your mind open, then you will surely love this book. A true gem.

Caryll Houselander, a modern mystic, in her gorgeous mastery of the English language, her precision in showing us our nature - running the whole gamut from our foibles to herioc, humble feats - offers the simple image of a "reed". For, as with Mary of Nazareth, we too are capable of allowing God to play His ineffable yet heart-enthralling music with our life.
I love this book. I've had my copy for a very long time, and I bought this one for my friend. THE REED OF GOD helps you to see our Blessed Mother Mary in a new light. Houselander helps to make Mary more identifiable and approachable. She take Mary off of the holy card, and makes her a beautiful example of how to respond to God's grace in our daily lives.
So many wonderful parts to this book. It us the gentlest of challenges to the reader and enables readers of many Christian denominations to understand Mary better and to emulate her surprising virtue 8n the seemingly meaningless routines of our daily lives. Very focused on how Mary leads us to Christ, because she herself was totally devoted to Him.
