Review

“A sea epic replete with love and intrigue, tainted by tragedy.” S.L. Gore, author of The Red Mirror Trilogy“Anyone who thrilled to the Titanic film will love this book.” Sandra Nielsen"Leonard Carpenter puts real magic and electrifying action into everything he writes! Highly recommended!" Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author of Dogs of War and Mars One“Action barely held in check, suspense under taut control with a master at the helm, Lusitania Lost is that rare book where we know the ending, yet thrill at how the author gets us to the tragic, unavoidable conclusion. Here are real people on both sides, the hunters and the hunted, caught in a geopolitical conflict and trying to find a solution that includes staying alive.” Mark Arnold, author of Monster: The Story of Young Mary Shelley"I'm always excited to read WW1 stories, but this one rewarded me beyond my expectations. Heart-breaking in places, always a page-turner. Read it!" Sheila Finch, author of A Villa Far From Rome"I'm a good writer; Leonard Carpenter is a great writer, and Lusitania Lost is his greatest yet." Leonard Wise, author of the Center Street Trilogy“You have a wonderful imagination, and it was a very enjoyable read.” F. Gregg Bemis, diver and owner of the Lusitania shipwreck

Lusitania Lost by Leonard Carpenter (Mango, September 2017) is an intriguing spy novel, a love story, a history lesson, and a fast-paced thriller with believable characters, many of them real personages, all rolled into one.Carpenter includes a helpful Who’s Who at the end of the book and a brief historical overview. You’ll be surprised how many characters you believed to be living and breathing persons who turn out to be figments of the author’s fertile imagination. The fact that you couldn’t tell which was which without a guide is a testament to the author’s superb storytelling skills.Carpenter cut his eye teeth writing science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Along with legends like Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague de Camp, and Robert Jordan, Leonard Carpenter helped chronicle the further adventures of Conan the Barbarian in mass-market paperback. He also penned a few Mythos tales and poems in the Lovecraft tradition. And he’s written Biohacker (2011), a modern apocalyptic technothrillerLusitania Lost has all the excitement of a motion picture extravaganza. It’s a highly-recommended pulse-pounding cliff=hanger.

Mr. Carpenter has written an excellent book. His major characters are well-drawn, and the various sub-plots hold the interest of the reader as the major story; that of the ship and those onboard moves on. The story of the ship, the crew, and the passengers fully involves the reader, One thing for which the author is to be commended, is his thorough understanding of the history of the period. He has no axe to grind, and ‘guilt’ is fairly apportioned among the British and the Germans. The chapters that describe trench warfare in Flanders and the fighting at Gallipoli are particularly well written. The author has a wonderful ability to buildup tension in the story, ease up, and then once again raise the tension level. It is an outstanding read.

It was an insight into the German mission to destroy any ships possibly aiding the British war effort. To achieve this goal their destruction of Passenger Liners, with disregard to the loss of life, was inexcusable. Obviously their intelligence operation was incapable of determining the probability of these ships carrying military weapons of war among their shipboard deliveries in the storage hold. Knowing full well, the loss of innocent lives that would take place in their attacks they, never the less, proceeded in the murder of thousands of innocents. The author was able to carry a story line of several passengers which was very interesting and developed into a well written novel.

I needed a big escapist read for the holidays and this is it! I highly recommend you read Lusitania Lost as it based on history and explains the actual underpinnings of the build-up to World War I. The romance, the intrigue, the spies! Do yourself a favor and head to the high seas on the Lusitania. You'll simply love it and not only be entertained but also learning real world history!

Great story of several of the passengers on the Lusitania. Captures the feeling of the time of early World War I and how it was like to be one of the grandest ocean liners of the time. You almost don't want it to end particularly in the way that it does but it is historically accurate except for something that seems somewhat fantastical but will let the reader decide.

Hard hitting novel, just like a torpedo. Can't wait for the movie! 5 STARS

The Sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, with the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew is one of the seminal tragedies of the Great War, one which could have been easily prevented. The RMS Lusitania was designed to be converted into a Armed merchant Cruiser, as several similar liners had been. However, at the time of her last sailing, the Lusitania had not actually been fitted with guns.It was decided that using the Lusitania to ship illegal munitions and even troops was a better usage than arming her. The Munitions may have spelled her doom- the single torpedo that U22 fired into her might not have sunk her, without secondary explosions. Of course those could have been boilers... or not.Leonard Carpenter takes all of this into account. He has written a quite neutral tale here- both the British and the Germans get their fair share of blame. To add to the tragedy, drama and excitement, Mr Carpenter has also added a couple of shipboard romances, and NY Gangsters, German spies and maidens in distress. This make this historical novel into one worthy of being ranked with the Titanic.Gripping, fast-paced, exciting- but with some nice tales of romance and intrigue woven in, also.
